Project Overview

This project involves designing a user-friendly banking app tailored specifically for couples. The primary objective is to address the unique financial needs and challenges faced by couples in managing their finances jointly. The existing banking solutions often fall short in providing a seamless and shared banking experience, leading to user dissatisfaction and confusion.

My Role

As a Product, UX, and UI designer, I covered the entire design process, from research to user testing. My work included concept development, wireframing, data-driven decisions, research planning, stakeholder workshops, and usability testing. I also led brainstorming sessions to align business and user needs and prioritize product goals.

The Problem

Couples often struggle to manage their finances smoothly with traditional banking apps. Common problems include:

Lack of joint account management features

Complex expense tracking

Lack of joint account management features

Difficulty in splitting bills.

Couples miss out on financial growth due to disjointed spending and saving.

Difficulty in open communication about finances.

Our Solution

My primary goal was to design and develop a user-centric, intuitive Couples Banking App that addresses these core issues and fosters financial harmony. We aimed to create an app that simplifies

Two Cards, Two UPIs.

Joint Loans, Joint Investment and Joint Insurance.

Shared savings goals and watch your future grow.

View complete transaction logs for trust and open communication.

Earn rewards on every transaction for more value.

My Impact

he app, currently awaiting approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has already garnered significant interest pre-launch. With 5,000 users signing up for beta testing and 7,500 joining the waitlist, the prototype achieved a 92% usability rating, and 85% of beta tester feedback was implemented. During testing, 98% of sessions were crash-free, and market research indicated that 65% of potential users preferred the app over competitors.

My Design Process

I followed the design thinking process with a user-centered design approach. Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that included 5 phases: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. It is the most appropriate choice when problems are ill-defined or unknown at all.

Empathize

In this stage, I place myself in the shoes of our users, couples striving to achieve financial harmony. I conduct interviews, surveys, and observations to deeply understand their experiences, thoughts, and emotions related to financial management.

In-depth Interviews

I conducted In-depth Interviews with 7 couples learning more about previous banking experiences as well as their needs, preferences and pain points. Among these couples, 3 were married, 2 were engaged, and 2 were dating. These interviews were carried out using Zoom, and I also interviewed individual partners from two of the couples.

Key insights derived from the interviews

Online Surveys

I conducted an online survey using Google Forms to gain insights into the preferences and needs of potential Finjoin users, including 36 couples and 20 individuals. These participants offered valuable input that has assisted us in precisely defining and framing the problem we intend to tackle. Following are the survey questions and answers.

Competitor Analysis

In my external research, I sought to identify existing solutions for couples to manage their finances jointly. I found four main alternatives, all mobile-based applications. From the numerous available options, I conducted a competitive analysis on these four applications specifically designed to address personal and joint financial management.Through a comprehensive Competitors Analysis, By analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of competitors, PocketPal can refine its features and positioning to stand out in the market.

Define

I gathered a significant amount of data, including both quantitative and qualitative insights, to pinpoint the specific issues our product's users face. After collecting user feedback, I'm focusing on understanding the genuine concerns and challenges users experience.

Empathy Map

This process was done to define the target audience with more clarity, as well as illustrate their needs and actions. Empathy mapping helped me gain perspective on their thoughts and feelings. The data in the empathy map are based on insights from user interviews.

Affinity Diagram

From the answers gathered, I mapped each answer to a traditional affinity map, with six top level categories — pain points, feelings, wants, motivations, values, and needs. Overall, it appeared that most couples did not closely keep track of what they spent or how much they spent each time they went out to eat.

Ideate

Using creative thinking and collaboration, I generate a multitude of ideas and design solutions to address the identified problems. This stage involves sketching, wireframing, and prototyping to visualize potential improvements.

User Flow

Before delving into the application layout, I initiated the process by crafting a User Flow, I started with rough sketches, gradually refining them, and engaging in iterative adjustments until I was satisfied with the outcome. Subsequently, I transitioned these hand-drawn concepts into a digital format using Figjam.

Information Architecture

By diligently following these comprehensive steps and adhering to user-centered design principles, we have effectively crafted an information architecture that is in perfect harmony with the objectives of simplifying financial management and delivering tailored recommendations.

Card Sorting

I conducted card sorting to categorize all the features into distinct sections.

Design

I began by creating rough sketches of the app's screens to map out the user journey, first on paper and then in Figma. These were later refined into high-fidelity wireframes to ensure the layout and design elements were user-friendly.

Wireframes

I then took the low-fi wireframes that were the best potential solutions and made them into medium fidelity wireframes in sketche. This would allow me to further refine the design and prepare for creating a prototype for testing

Design System

I additionally instituted a design system, harnessing the power of Auto Layout, variables, and the latest Figma updates. This strategic move was aimed at guaranteeing uniformity and cohesion throughout the application, promoting a visually harmonious and efficient user experience.
